Total Disc Replacement –
Lumbar Spine Surgery

ani1

Total disc replacement for lumbar spine surgery is a radical treatment that replaces all disc material with an artificial mobile prosthesis, or implant. A total disc replacement can be considered an alternative to spinal fusion and aims to recreate the normal dynamic function of the spine. This procedure mainly treats lower back pain caused by degenerative disc disease or discogenic pain. While total disc replacement has been approved by the FDA, long term American studies regarding its efficacy are not yet available.

As spinal surgery and mobile prosthesis technology continues to evolve, the use of artificial disc replacements is becoming more widespread due to the ability to preserve natural motion and stability. This procedure is done from the front of the spine and involves removal of the affected disc material. Once removed, the restoration of disc height is completed with the artificial disc.

Lumbar Disc Replacement Treatment
While lumbar disc replacement may be a viable form of spinal treatment, there is still some uncertainty. Spine disc replacements can break or become infected and the artificial pieces can wear out over time, possibly requiring additional surgery later. As long term data for total disc replacements is not yet available, University Spine Associates may choose a traditional form of spinal surgery depending on the individual patient. Cervical artificial disc replacement may also be a viable option for patients suffering from degenerative cervical disc disease. Dr. Blecher is certified in both cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement and has been a frequent instructor for courses teaching artificial disc replacement. Dr. Blecher has also authored two papers presented at the Spine Arthroplasty Society in Vienna in 2004.

As with any spinal surgery or treatment process, University Spine Associates will provide each patient with all the options available to him or her. Total disc replacement may be right for the patient, but we will speak with you to determine the best course of action to achieve the best results.
