Posterior Cervical Fusion

Although University Spine Associates offers many emerging technologies and minimally invasive treatment approaches to spinal surgery, some patients in need of a multilevel procedure may undergo a posterior cervical fusion. The posterior cervical fusion is a cervical spine surgery done from the back of the neck and fuses some of the cervical vertebrae into one solid section of bone. It often utilizes bone grafts, instrumentation, and rods to secure the vertebrae as it heals over time.

The posterior cervical fusion may be recommended for patients experiencing severe neck pain as a result from a deformity in the curve of the neck such as scoliosis, cervical stenosis, spinal tumors, or spinal trauma involving spinal cord injuries or fractures. A posterior cervical fusion involves shaving a layer of bone in the vertebrae and using bone graft to bridge the spinal vertebraes that are being fused. The bone graft assists to stimulate the bones to fuse and heal together.

As an invasive cervical surgery, patients are usually required to stay in the hospital for one to several days post-surgery. University Spine Associates will maintain close follow up care to monitor your level of pain and discomfort. Patients start physical therapy the following day after surgery to assist in returning you to a stable medical condition. Outpatient physical therapy may begin approximately four to six weeks after surgery.
