Outpatient Spinal Surgery / Minimally Invasive Surgery

With the advent of endoscopic technology and the advancement of surgical instrumentation, the term “minimally invasive” has been used to describe many surgical procedures. But what does it mean? In short, minimally invasive surgical procedures seeks to achieve the same outcomes of traditional open surgery, but through a series of small incisions. Today, endoscopic procedures, or limited access approaches, have entered the realm of spine surgery, providing qualifying patients with an alterative spine treatment option in which to obtain relief from severe spinal, back, and neck pain.

What are the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Lumbar & Cervical Spine Surgery?
When a patient’s spinal deformity (such as scoliosis), degenerative condition, or spine injury presents symptoms that cannot be alleviated through non-invasive spinal treatments, spine surgery (like spinal fusion and disc surgery) may present itself as a good option for obtaining long-term relief from severe and chronic spinal pain. Should a patient qualify, minimally invasive spine surgery may offer some benefits over traditional open back and neck surgery when considering the length and severity of patient recovery. Benefits of endoscopic or limited access spine surgery may include, but are not limited to, a reduced intraoperative blood loss, a shortened hospital stay, and a less painful and lengthy recovery. Generally, however, long term outcomes show similar results without a definitive long term advantage of one approach versus the other. It is most important for patients to seek out the correct solution for their problem regardless of the approach used.
